The Sunday Philosophy Club - Alexander McCall Smith I'm not sure what word I'm looking for to describe this book: gentle, genteel, genial, maybe all of the above. The novel is written by the author of The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency but this is the first book in a different series. Isabel Dalhousie lives quite comfortably in Edinburgh, where she edits a philosophical journal. I would've said I have no interest in philosophy (and just barely squeaked by in Ph101) but the author/protag has a nice way of applying the subject to events in everyday life. Isabel is also an amateur sleuth. The author did not have Isabel bumbling her way into dangerous situations, which I appreciated. I often get frustrated when the heroine blindly goes where everyone knows she should not go. There is a great creepy moment that takes place late one evening, which if I'd read it late at night may have kept me from a peaceful night's sleep. Well done.
