Marian Sutro is a 19 year old girl in war-torn London who wants to do something with her life, make a difference in the was effort. A she's bilingual, she's recruited to become an operative in France. The novel takes us through her training, her deployment, and her various missions while in France. We watch her grow from a naive, protected young woman to a cunning spy.
A mostly fast-paced story. There was a bit of science thrown in, all about the atomic bomb. While informative, I thought it interrupted the rhythm. I don't feel like I ever got to know Marian, she was aloof and at times I didn't agree with her choices. The novel shows the struggle to survive in wartime. Do you lay low, take care of yourself or do you have a responsibilty bigger than that? While the answer may seem apparent, having the guts to be self-sacrificing is not so easy.
