This is the story of Empire Falls and all that makes up a small town; first in times of prosperity and then as the town falls in on itself in leaner times. Interesting, complex characters, most of whom are likable in spite of their flaws. This book is worth reading, if only to read Russo's summary of the mating dance of the teenagers in Empire Falls. His description is both poignant and funny. Aside from some funny scenarios, this is a heartbreakingly beautiful story.
