The True Meaning of Smekday - Adam Rex 3.5 stars. This story is fun, fun, fun, if you don't overthink it.(of course if you do overthink it, it's about war and race and misjudging others, which is heavy stuff) I mean it's about an eleven year old girl, who sets off on a cross-country trip to be reunited with her mother after an alien invasion. If you're okay with that, it's loads of fun. She is joined on her voyage by her cat Piggy and her friend J.Lo, who is one of the invading aliens. They become friends when he screws up on a mission and becomes alien-non-grata among his "people". J.Lo is a silly alien with poor language skills, but also with a heart of gold, if aliens have hearts. The trio have many adventures and close calls with all kinds (people and aliens and robots) who are trying to thwart them in their ultimate goal, which is to save the world. No spoilers here.

Most of the adult characters are silly and useless, with the exception of "the chief" a native american who saw the ufo land in rosswell.I wish he played a bigger role in the story. The rest of them are pretty oblivious or self-serving. I guess my one complaint about the book was that it just went on a little too long. I kind of lost interest toward the end and wasn't invested in the whole resolution. (427 pp)
