I was hoping to love this book based on reviews I have read. The story revolves around a Vietnam vet, John Wade, who escapes to a cabin on a lake with his wife Kathy, after his failed run for Senate. Kathy disappears and the novel spins out a number of hypotheses for what may have happened. I didn't mind that this issue was never resolved. What I had trouble with:
1) how did Wade become a successful politician after being a loner creepy kid obsessed with magic, who was also involved in the My Lai massacre in Vietnam ?
2) why did his wife Kathy stay with him for 20 years, when he showed so many signs of instability...stalking her, comparing their relationship to that of two snakes who try to eat each other ?
